我从信箱里取出报纸，但其中也没什么重要的内容，净是些记者们自作主张认为大众应该知道、参与其中，并抱有看法的事情。

以下就是我当时了解到的在20世纪60年代初人们对作家的定义：

（1）作家总是戴着眼镜，而且永远不梳头。他们在一半时间里对所有的事情都感到愤怒，而在另一半时间里则陷入沮丧。作家要在酒吧里度过他生命中的大部分时间，与其他蓬头垢面、戴着眼镜的作家争论个没完。作家还要说一些很有“深度”的话。他们总是不满意于刚刚出版的那本小说，而总是对自己下一部小说的剧情有着许多绝妙的点子。

（2）作家有责任和义务不被自己所属的时代理解。他们坚信自己出生在一个平庸的时代，得到理解就意味着失去被视为天才的机会。作家对每个句子都要进行反复修改和重写。一个普通人的词汇量在三千个单词左右，但真正的作家从不使用这些单词，因为字典里还有另外十八万九千个单词，更何况他根本不是什么普通人。

（3）作家想说的话只有同为作家的人才能理解。即便如此，也不能阻止一名作家在暗中憎恨其他所有作家，因为他们总在争夺几个世纪以来文学史上留下的空缺。于是，一众作家都在竞逐“最复杂作品”奖——获胜者的成就就是成功撰写了世界上最晦涩难懂的书。

（4）作家喜欢用一些特别能唬人的名词来解释各种事物，比如“符号学”“认知论”“新具体主义”。当作家想唬住谁的时候，他们会说“爱因斯坦就是个傻瓜”，又或是“托尔斯泰是资产阶级的小丑”，于是每个人都会感到震惊。他们还会不遗余力地去告诉别人相对论是胡说八道，托尔斯泰是俄国贵族的捍卫者。

（5）想要吸引女人的时候，作家会说：“我是一名作家。”然后在餐巾纸上胡乱写一首诗。这招屡试不爽。

（6）鉴于作家具备深厚的文化素养，他们总能找到充当文学评论家的工作。在这个角色中，他们可以通过为朋友们的作品撰写评论来表现自己的慷慨。但在任何此类评论中，都有一半在引用外国作者的话，另一半则是在分析书中的句子，他们总会使用诸如“认识论的切割”或“对生活综合的二维视野”之类的表达。每一个读到书评的人都会说：“这是多...
